Salbutamol is highly active in preventing antigen-induced release of histamine and slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis, SRS(A),from most cells in human lung sensitised with lgE antibody. Such Type 1 hypersensitivity reactions are generally considered to be the primary triggers of the allergic asthma syndrome. Ipratropium bromide is an anticholinergic agent which inhibits vagally medicated reflexes by antagonizing the action of acetylcholine, the transmitter agent released from the vagus nerve. The bronchodilation following inhalation of ipratropium bromide is primarily local and site specific to the lung and not systemic in nature.
